The NBA will fine Mark Cuban $600,000 for his comments on tanking
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban made some interesting remarks regarding teams tanking. This didn’t sit over well with the NBA brass, and they fined Cuban $600,000 for his comments.
The Dallas Mavericks are in the press, but not for the team’s success or anything good. First, an allegation of workplace misconduct by their front office involving sexual harassment and domestic violence toward female coworkers. Second, Mark Cuban made interesting comments regarding how tanking was the Mavericks best option.
"I was like, ‘Look, losing is our best option,'” Cuban said on the podcast. “Adam [Silver] would hate hearing that, but I at least sat down and I explained it to them. And I explained what our plans were going to be this summer, that we’re not going to tank again. This was, like, a year and a half tanking, and that was too brutal for me. But being transparent, I think that’s the key to being kind of a players’ owner and having stability.”"
That quote spread quickly, which resulted in the league giving Cuban a whopping $600,000 fine for the comments.
The team’s longtime star and nucleus Dirk Nowitzki weren’t impressed, stating he would “never stand for losing on purpose. That’s not who I am.” But the reality of this entire situation is that tanking happens in the NBA. The problem with Cuban’s comments is that those plans aren’t supposed to be said out in the open. It’s an open secret, but the word secret is there for a reason.

Cuban played kiss and tell, instead of having the organizations back. Comparisons will come between the Mavericks and 76ers, but we now know the main difference between the two.
