The Hornets begin their long climb back into the playoff race against the struggling Nets.

The Charlotte Hornets (24-33) were not supposed to be in this predicament.

Before the season began, the Hornets had dreams of being a dark horse contender in the Eastern Conference, but thanks to injuries and an over-reliance on star guard Kemba Walker, Charlotte stumbled out the gate and has never really recovered.

When the Hornets kick-start the second-half of the 2017-18 NBA season against the rebuilding Brooklyn Nets (19-40), they will be staring at a six-and-a-half game deficit, which is doable in the East, but still a tall order for a team that has had trouble finding consistency so far this season.

Walker has been at his usual dynamic self, but some are wondering if the Hornets missed a golden opportunity to start a rebuilding process that is sure to come with the exit of former GM Rich Cho.

Whatever the case, Charlotte will try to do it’s best to get back into the playoff chase, and they can get off on a good foot against the Nets, who walk into the second-half of their season on a seven-game losing streak.

It was a known fact that Brooklyn would be in rebuilding mode for the foreseeable future and was expected to be in this position, and through the ashes of another lost season, the Nets have found a future building block in Spencer Dinwiddie, who is averaging career highs in points (13.6), assists (6.7) and rebounds (3.3).

Though Brooklyn has one of the worse records in the East, they have been competitive over the past month, and will not be an easy task for the Hornets. Charlotte needs this game, and the Nets would love nothing but to play spoiler to the Hornets playoff chances.
