Olympics live stream: Watch women’s speedskating mass start medal online
With its inaugural appearance at the Winter Olympics, the women’s speedskating mass start will be available to watch online and by live stream.
The women’s speedskating mass start will make its debut at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics on Saturday, Feb. 24. The races will begin at 6 a.m. ET with the semifinal, followed by another heat of the semifinal at 6:15 a.m. ET. However, the final race, for which the medals will be awarded, is expected to begin at 7:30 a.m. ET.
As many as 24 skaters participate in the mass start, which sees competitors skate 6,400-meters, or 16 laps, while actively dealing with other skaters on the track. (Long-track speedskaters are not used to skating against competitors, they’re used to competing against a clock, and sometimes another skater is on the same track at the same time.) This adds an element of strategy (drafting, bumping, etc.) to the sport and also “chaos” as speedskaters like to describe it.
Francesca Lollobrigida from Italy, Kim Bo-reum of South Korea and China’s Guo Dan are expected to take gold, silver and bronze in the women’s mass start, though the USA will have three women competing: Heather Bergsma, Mia Manganello and Carlijn Schoutens.
