The Philadelphia Eagles captured their first Super Bowl title in 2017 and now their first step towards repeating starts with the 2018 NFL Draft.

Not many teams in the NFL imagine their backup quarterback leading them to a championship but for the Philadelphia Eagles, the impossible became reality in 2017.

Second-year head coach Doug Pederson took the Eagles from worst to first in the NFC East en route to capturing the team’s first Super Bowl title in franchise history over the New England Patriots. With a Lombardi Trophy in hand, the Eagles now look to do everything in their power to stay on top in the NFC and it all starts with the 2018 NFL Draft.

Franchise quarterback Carson Wentz will be back next season and with a majority of their core still in tact, here’s how Philadelphia could look to bolster their roster via the draft in their quest for a repeat.

1st round

With Nigel Bradham slated to be an unrestricted free agent, linebacker is one of the few holes that the Eagles will have to worry about filling in the upcoming draft. Boise State standout Leighton Vander Esch is one player who makes a lot of sense at this spot.

Vander Esch is a rangy 6-foot-4, 240-pound linebacker who put racked up 141 tackles, four forced fumbles and 8.5 tackles for loss last season with the Broncos. A former two-sport standout in high school, Vander Esch uses his great athleticism to make plays all over the field and is versatile as both a blitzer and as a defender in coverage. Despite just one year of starting experience at Boise State, Vander Esch is a player with some major helium and could go even higher than this pick with a good showing at the Combine.

The Eagles were one of the best defenses in the NFL last season and it was a huge reason why they were able to ride a backup quarterback to a Super Bowl championship. Replacing Bradham with a player like Vander Esch wouldn’t represent a big drop in production, if at all, and allow Philly’s defense to reload for another championship run in 2018.

The Eagles have no selections in the second and third rounds.
