Ester Ledecká wins historic gold in Women’s Parallel Giant Slalom Final
By Nir Regev
Czech Republic’s Ester Ledecká made Winter Olympics history by winning gold in the Women’s Parallel Giant Slalom Final in Pyeongchang.
Ester Ledecká is officially a legend in Winter Olympics history, becoming the first woman to win gold in both snowboarding and skiing in the same Winter Olympics. She is one of just five in Winter Olympics history to win a gold medal in two separate sports.
Fresh off a gold medal at the Super-G alpine skiing event, Ledecká took home the gold in the Women’s Parallel Giant Slalom Final. Ledecká is now Czech Republic’s first ever athlete to win gold in Women’s Parallel Giant Slalom at the Winter Olympic games.
The double gold is truly a historic feat for the 22-year-old Prague superstar. Ledecká couldn’t believe her eyes when she won the Super-G by 0.01 seconds against defending gold medalist Anna Veith, and now this? Simply spectacular, a performance snowboarding fans will eternally remember.
MEDAL RESULT | Women's Parallel Giant Slalom Final
Ester Ledecká
Selina Jörg
Ramona Theresia Hofmeister
The silver medal went to Germany’s Selina Jörg, and the bronze medal went to Germany’s Ramona Theresia Hofmeister. Russia’s/OAR’s Alena Zavarzina came in fourth place just off the podium. She was the bronze medalist at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic games. Ester Ledecká won the Big Final by 0.46 seconds against Selina Jörg. Ramona Theresia Hofmeister won the Small Final by 4.07 seconds against Alena Zavarzina.
Zavarzina seemed to momentarily slip in both races against Jörg in the semi-final heat and against Hofmeister in the small final. She grabbed her head in distress and paused momentarily during her race with Jörg, feeling she wouldn’t catch up.
The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic winners were unable to recapture medals this time around. 2014 Sochi silver medalist Tomoka Takeuchi from Japan was just edged out by Germany’s Selina Jörg in the quarterfinals, and gold medalist Patrizia Kummer was unable to advance against eventual winner Ester Ledecká. Austria’s Ina Meschik who came at fourth just off the podium in Sochi, was unable to advance against Germany’s Ramona Theresia Hofmeister.
