Updated Olympics men’s hockey bracket: Canada wins bronze medal
One game remains in the Olympics men’s hockey tournament after Canada knocks off Czech Republic to win the bronze medal.
Canada skated away with bronze early Saturday morning, leaving just the gold medal game left in the Olympics men’s hockey tournament. Here is a look at the update bracket following Canada’s victory over Czech Republic:
Canada used three goals in the first and three goals in the third to outlast Czech Republic, which scored three goals of its own in the third, but only one in the first. Canada had won gold in three of the last four Olympics, including the last two. Czech Republic has not medaled since winning bronze in 2006.
With no NHL participation, Canada wasn’t quite the favorite it would have been had it been able to put Sidney Crosby on its first line and Jonathan Toews on its fourth. That said, bronze is disappointing given it had what looked to be an easy path to the gold medal game following victory over Finland in the quarterfinals. It was stunned by underdog Germany in the semifinals.
Germany, which plays the Olympic Athletes from Russia in the gold medal game, is the biggest surprise of the tournament. It knocked off top seed Sweden and followed that up with a victory over Canada to face OAR on Saturday at 11:10 p.m. ET. OAR has steamrolled the competition this tournament, outscoring opponents 21-3 in its last four games. A German victory would be one of the biggest upset in Olympics men’s hockey history, possibly topping the 1980 Miracle on Ice.
