While the Serie A title race is a two-team race between Napoli and Juventus, the race for spots in Europe next season is extremely close. Third-place Roma are one point ahead of Lazio and two points ahead of Inter Milan in the race for the final Champions League spot. On Sunday, Roma host AC Milan. Milan are seventh in Serie A, level on points with Sampdoria for the final Europa League spot.
Roma blew a 1-0 lead on Wednesday in the Champions League, falling 2-1 to Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine. Domestically, Roma have won three straight games. At the Olympic Stadium, Roma have won eight of 13 games, picking up 25 of 39 points this season. Eusebio Di Francesco’s side will look to pick up all three points on Sunday to maintain their position in the table ahead of Lazio and Inter. Edin Dzeko leads the club with 11 goals but the club has struggled to find a secondary scoring option.
The decision to fire Vincenzo Montella and replace him with Gennaro Gattuso turned around Milan’s season. Over their last seven games, Milan have won five games picked up 17 of 21 points and allowed only four goals. Milan’s streak have moved them from 11th to seventh in the table and a potential spot in Europe next season. Giacomo Bonaventura has been one of the biggest benefactors from Gattuso taking over. The Italian international is playing a larger role and has scored four goals since Gattuso took over on Nov. 27. Bonaventura scored the lone goal in Milan’s win over sixth place Sampdoria last weekend.
