In a surprise to no one, Norway dominated the Winter Olympics medal count, bringing home the most overall medals, with 39.

The closing ceremony has concluded and the athletes are boarding their planes home to their respective countries following a thrilling showing at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

There were 102 gold medals up for anyone to win in the 15 sports that were part of the Pyeongchang Games programme, and Norway took a good chunk of them.

In fact, Norway set a new record for the most medals won by any one country at the Winter Games. Previously held by the United States, which amassed 37 at the Vancouver Games in 2010, Norway added two more for a total of 39 in Pyeongchang.

Norway also tied Germany for the most gold medals at these Games, with 14. That matches the record set by Canada on its home turf in 2010.

Marit Bjorgen added Norway’s final medal in the Games’ final event, the women’s cross-country skiing mass start. Incredibly, it was Bjorgen’s fifth medal of the 2018 Winter Games. She is, unsurprisingly, the most decorated Olympian of all time.

It was a great Olympics for women athletes. Czech snowboarder and alpine skiier Ester Ledecka became the first woman to win a medal in two different sports in a single Winter Olympics:

Epically, Ledecka showed up to her press conference following her win wearing goggles, quipping, “I was not prepared to be at this ceremony, and I don’t have any makeup.”

Team USA’s women racked up the medals, as well. Of the 23 total medals the Americans claimed in Pyeongchang, the women brought home more than half.
