6. Lorenzo Carter, LB, Georgia

Why he’s on this list

Speaking of guys who could blow up the combine, Carter has all the makings and he’s the first of three straight guys on the list who aren’t first-round picks. These are guys whose combines could either massively boost, or inexorably hurt their draft stock.

Carter, at 6-foot-6 and 242 pounds, came out of high school as one of the most coveted players in the nation but never quite lived up to the billing. That said, he’s an outstanding athlete and has the size/physical tools combination teams will covet.

What he needs to do

First of all, he needs to figure out his role in the NFL. Is he a pass rusher? Is he a true off-ball linebacker? Is he a hybrid in the Bruce Irvin mold?

If he’s going to play the edge, he must get bigger and stronger while maintaining his lateral quickness and agility. If he puts up top numbers in the 40, 3-cone, and short shuttle (conceivable in each), he could remind teams that few players in the draft have more pedigree and vault him up boards.
