2018 NFL Draft: Green Bay Packers 7-round mock draft
Round 2, Pick 45
Will Hernandez, G, Texas-El Paso
Green Bay may be comfortable allowing Justin McCray, their Swiss Army Knife backup, to start at right guard for the departing Jhari Evans this season. And maybe that’s a suitable solution.
That said, the talent along the offensive line exists solitarily at the top. If the Packers want a lineman—and they should—this is the move.
Hernandez is a throwback guard, a mauler in the run game with quick feet and a powerful punch. The guy even wears a neck roll. C’mon, if this guy isn’t made for Green Bay, I don’t know who is. And given the value here—I’d be fine with a team taking Hernandez in the first round, he’s that good—this is the best situation the Packers will be in to get an offensive lineman.
It also gives Jason Spriggs and Kyle Murphy one more offseason, training camp, and preseason to try to make it as future right tackles. Bryan Bulaga’s inability to stay healthy has cost the Packers in the past, but if he’s on the field, we know he’s a Pro Bowl player. Getting a guard who can start Day 1 and be a high-level player would boost Green Bay in the short term as well.
