Are you going to watch the NHL now that the Olympics are over, or what?
For a brief, wonderful two-week period, the entire United States cared about ice hockey. But now what?
Team USA women’s hockey’s thrilling overtime win in the gold medal game over Canada was, casually, the most-watched late-night broadcast in NBCSN history.
3.7 million viewers tuned in to watch Hilary Knight, Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson, Maddie Rooney and the rest of Team USA snapped the United States’ 20-year gold-medal drought.
Perhaps those viewers are die-hard hockey fans. Perhaps they got lured in by the starpower of the women’s team and the promise of an upset over hockey superpower Canada. Or perhaps they just watched because everyone on their Twitter timeline was.
Whatever the reason, NBCSN saw a huge flood of hockey viewers at a time when many thought NBC and NBCSN’s broadcasts would be digital ghost towns due to the NHL pulling its players out of the Olympics.
The viewers had spoken…but can they be relied upon to do it again?
Most NHL game broadcasts in the United States do not get anything close to 3.7 million viewers. During the 2016-17 NHL regular season, NBCSN averaged 336,000 viewers on its 91 games.
The worry moving forward is that NHL viewership is now going to suffer the repercussions of the league opting to skip the 2018 Winter Games. Without the Olympics airing alongside the NHL, the primetime broadcasts weren’t able to benefit from a lead-in audience.
But as the Olympics reminded us, hockey is magical! So fast! So exciting! Don’t let that feeling slip away now that the Games are over.
The Stanley Cup playoffs are about to begin in earnest. Will you be watching?
