Report card grades for all 31 NHL teams at the trade deadline
Dallas Stars: F
One of the biggest surprises at the deadline was the Dallas Stars’ inactivity. Nearly every team in the Central Division made improvements to its roster. Dallas needed to add secondary scoring options on the wing. Outside of the first line of Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Alexander Radulov, there isn’t much offensive production. With all the options on the market, it’s surprising Dallas ended up with none of them.
The prices for players such as Rick Nash and Evander Kane were slightly high, but there were even some cheaper options available for Dallas to try out. Grabner is a player who would have fit in Dallas that didn’t carry a large price tag. Even a rental player like Thomas Vanek could have been brought in to score goals down the stretch for Dallas. Not making any moves at the deadline feels like general manager is not fully invested in the season. When you have assets such as Benn, Seguin and Radulov it is hard to give up a season.
Winnipeg, Nashville and wild card teams like Colorado got better. The West is so wide-open that when it comes to the playoff race a few bad games can take you out of it. Only three points separate the first wild-card spot from four other teams. It will be a great race to watch down the stretch. Because Jim Nill did not make any moves as all of the other teams around him improved, Dallas receives an F.
