Dig, if you will, Prince and the Twins joining forces
By Sean Sears
The late-pop star Prince’s Estate, a native Minnesotan, and the Twins have struck a deal to make cross-themed Twins and Prince merchandise.
It was once said that on the seventh day of creation, God made Prince. That phrase was coined by Prince himself, and whether he was born or created — the jury is still out on which — the late singer continues to prove his immortality.
Since his death in 2016, just about everyone has tried grave rob Prince’s legacy and slap it on merchandise. He was notoriously protective of his image during his life, and the vultures flocked once he was no longer around to protect himself. His estate has been very careful about who they let in, and there’s no real way to determine a pattern of acceptance.
The latest marriage is perhaps the most bizarre: Prince and the Minnesota Twins are joining forces.
While that may seem like a strange combination, many Minnesotans and Twins fans have to feel this deal was a no-brainer. According to Star Tribune, the Prince estate has agreed to work with the Twins on creating Prince merchandise to be sold year-around exclusively at Target Field.
On top of this, the Twins will also host their 2nd ‘Prince night’ on June 8th, which is the day after the famous singers birthday, but the merchandise is reportedly going to be ready for the Twins April 5th home opener against the Mariners.
The first 10,000 fans will also receive inflatable purple guitars, similar to Prince’s famous purple ‘symbol’ guitar. Twins CEO Dave St. Peter gave a statement on the exciting new deal for his club.
"“Along with our fans, we look forward to celebrating the legacy of a man who brought an international spotlight to our great city,” team CEO Dave St. Peter told the Star Tribune. The team’s retail provider, Delaware North Sportservice, struck a deal with Bravado, the Universal Music-owned merchandising company that struck a deal with Prince’s estateearly last year. Team representatives said Prince’s family approved of the deal."
The Star Tribune also reports that co-branding between the late singers Estate and the Twins is the first of its kind in the MLB. However, other teams have teamed up with celebrities in the past to co-create merchandise as well as being name team ambassadors, like Chance the Rapper and the Chicago White Sox.
Here’s a look at what some of the hats might look like.
With the Twins and Prince’s estate coming together on this deal, the Twins might as well just adopt the color purple into their color scheme. But, as a tribute to the late-star, it’s hard to find a better way to recognize a person who meant so much to the people of Minnesota.
