Why is Fortnite Battle Royale so popular right now?

There are many factors that make it easier to explain why Fortnite is exploding in popularity. First off, the “Battle Royale” video game genre is fairly young, with just a handful of titles available right now. That means the early birds get the most worms right now, and we’re at a massive worm overflow at the moment.

Some will (rightfully) saw that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a realistic game of this genre that involves real weapons, real bullet drop, complex mechanics and a much more serious tone, is a better game. However, Fortnite edges that title in popularity at the moment because it’s free, on both PS4 and Xbox One, involves less realistic and more simple combat mechanics and offers a more child-friendly art design. Plus, because Epic Games is a competent developer with its own gameplay engine, there are fewer cheaters and more server stability.

It’s the reason why Fortnite Battle Royale is played by hardcore gaming enthusiasts and celebrities alike; it appeals to (and can be played by) all audiences. Plus, you can build some wacky stuff in this game, including ramps that reach for the heavens or entire mansions laid with booby traps. There are tons of options at stake, and there’s more of an opportunity to win using whatever weapons you find, de-emphasizing gear found.

Most important is the adrenaline that comes from chasing the victory. When 99 players are expected to lose out of 100, each closer step to the end gets the heart pumping just a tad quicker. As the player count dwindles to a dozen or so, it’s hard not to tense up and get serious. One false step could mean the end of your game, and coming in with a clutch kill right at the end is indescribably intense jubilation.
