KANSAS CITY, MO - DECEMBER 16: Defensive end Joey Bosa

The Los Angeles Chargers finished strong after a slow start in 2017. Meanwhile, the team’s top pass rusher took care of some personal maintenance recently.

It’s hard to put a finger on when it happened…literally. Sometime during his impressive rookie campaign in 2016, then-San Diego Chargers’ defensive end Joey Bosa dislocated one of his digits.

Obviously, that had no effect on the talent pass-rusher. The third-overall selection in the draft that year missed the first four games and still totaled a team-high 10.5 sacks. Bosa also totaled 41 stops and led the club in both tackles for losses (17) and quarterback hits (21). The former Ohio State standout would capture NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors.

This past season, Bosa was even better, mainly because he was played and started all 16 contests for the now-Los Angeles Chargers. He finished sixth on the club with 70 tackles, to go along with 12.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. He was named to the Pro Bowl but did not participate in the game. And now we have a hint as to why.

Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times reports that the Bolts’ pass-rushing terror has undergone surgery in regards to the injury. Yes, it may seem like a minor thing. But you have to think that with this issue out of the way, the two-year pro could be even more effective this upcoming summer and fall.

Teamed with Melvin Ingram, the Chargers’ pass rush ranks as one of the more potent in the league these days. The team finished this past season with 43 sacks, the club’s highest total since 2010 (47).

The Chargers fell just short of a playoff berth this past season but did win nine of their final 12 games. Having a healthier Bosa in the lineup does nothing but helps the team’s postseason cause in 2018.
