USA Hockey has decreed Mar. 2 Hockey Jersey Day in honor of Hockey Weekend Across America. Since we love both hockey and some good swag here at FanSided, we decided to share our favorites in celebration.

Call them sweaters, call them jerseys. They might be the most exorbitantly expensive piece of sports apparel money can buy, but hockey jerseys can be some of the coolest, ugliest or wildest in sports.

To wit, the FanSided staff decided to take a stroll down memory lane (or the current selection at Fanatics) and reminisce about our all-time favorite hockey jerseys.

Some of these jerseys are from our favorite teams growing up. Some of them are recent additions that bring the team’s logo and colors seamlessly into the modern era. Some of them we love simply because they’re so ugly.

List compiled by senior editor Michelle Bruton. Without further ado:

Dave Stevenson: Hartford Whalers green jersey

My favorite NHL jersey of all-time is the Hartford Whalers green jersey. Such a perfect color combination. Green is an underutilized color in jerseys, because it’s usually awful. But for the Whalers, it’s perfect. The white and blue complement it very well. The Carolina Hurricanes rarely wear Whalers jerseys during games, which makes me sad. Bring back the Whalers!

Michelle Bruton: 1970s California Golden Seals jersey

“I grew up in Southern New Hampshire, and I had a specific cheer for when the Boston Bruins scored goals before I could even speak. That being said, the California Golden Seals are one of the best franchises in all of NHL history, if not the best. They certainly have one of the best jerseys. Their colors are delightful, their logo is adorable, and their story is incredible. They were ‘famous for their white skates and losing record.’ I regularly troll eBay looking for Golden Seals merch.”

Adam Strangis: Arizona Coyotes black throwback jersey

“The best ugly jersey ever, I actually used to own this one. The colors are just so far off from a normal NHL jersey, and yet, it’s still cool knowing how hideous it is. I found it at a thrift store years ago. It was like, $5.”

Derek Grochowski: Buffalo Sabres 2018 Winter Classic jersey

“The Sabres finally got it right and moved away from the Navy blue with this jersey. The classic colors look great on the ice and on TV, but what really makes the jersey is the small details. The Buffalo on the front is leather (at least it looks like leather); the letters and numbers are felt. The new alternate logo on the shoulder is sharp and a fresh look for the Sabres. Fans are hoping this becomes their permanent jersey next season.”

Consensus: Blues third jersey, 1996

Feast your eyes on hands-down the ugliest and also most incredible hockey jersey of all time. Mike Keenan literally refused to wear it, and therefore robbed us of seeing an iconic hockey jersey in action.
