Three points separate sixth place RB Leipzig and second place Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga table. Both teams are battling for a position in Champions League next season and Saturday’s game could determine which teams qualifies. With teams so tightly packed within the top six in the Bundesliga, the table is in a constant state of change.
Despite losing to Napoli in the second leg of their Europa League draw, Leipzig advanced to the round of 16 on away goals. However, Leipzig’s push in Europe has hurt them domestically. The Bulls dropped their last two Bundesliga games, losing 2-1 to fourth place Frankfurt and 2-1 to last place Koln. Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl has decided to rest Timo Werner for the Europa League, and use him as a sub in the last two games. The German international leads Leipzig with 10 goals but could not find a late equalizer. After leading the Bundesliga in assists last season, Emil Forsberg has had a very disappointing season. For Leipzig to qualify for Champions League next season, they need Forsberg to rediscover his playmaking ability.
Dortmund could have moved three points ahead of third place Schalke on Monday but had to settle for a draw against Augsburg. Despite failing to pick up three points, Peter Stoger’s unbeaten streak has reached nine games as Dortmund’s manager. In their last nine games, Dortmund have picked up 19 of 27 points. Marco Reus has comeback from injury and played well for Dortmund, scoring in the last two games. The return of Reus and improved play of André Schürrle could be enough to help Dortmund remain above Leipzig in the table.
