Despite dropping points for the first time since November, Bayern Munich are still 19 points ahead of second-place Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga table. With 10 games left, Bayern can clinch the league title with four more wins. On Sunday, Freiburg host Bayern at Schwarzwald-Stadion. Freiburg are 13th in the Bundesliga table with 29 points this season, 31 points behind Bayern.
Freiburg drew 1-1 with Hoffenheim last weekend, with Nils Petersen scoring his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Since joining Freiburg in 2015, Petersen has scored 61 goals but has struggled against his former team. Against Bayern, Petersen has scored only one goal in eight games. Christian Streich’s team have picked up points in 11 of their last 12 games. Freiburg have picked up 21 of 36 points to move out of the relegation zone and are five points clear of the relegation playoff spot. However, Freiburg could be in trouble against Bayern’s attack. Only two teams have allowed more goals this season than Freiburg.
Bayern had to settle for a scoreless draw against Hertha Berlin in their last game. However, the game was costly for Bayern, as winger Kingsley Coman suffered an ankle injury that is expected to keep him out the rest of the season. The injury will force Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry to have a bigger role. While Robben and Ribéry have the talent to do so, they have struggled to stay healthy over the past few seasons as they continue to move deeper into their 30s. Jupp Heynckes will likely give Thomas Muller and James Rodriguez more playing time on the wing due to Coman’s injury. With Thiago healthy again, Heynckes has the luxury of being able to move Rodriguez wider and shift his formation.
