iZombie’s season 4 premiere saw Liv solving a Seattle Seahawks superfan murder mystery, and a hungry Angus freed from a well.

iZombie’s season 4 premiere saw a new Seattle, a fully enclosed, experimental, zombie-inhabited city with its remaining human population. Non-infected humans mark the doors of zombie residents with a giant red Z to warn each other. The underlying issue of the city is hunger, as there simply aren’t enough rations to feed the growing zombie population. We come across a Seattle Seahawks superfan early, who’s been murdered with Liv and Clive on the case. Clive tells Liv to play along to anti-zombie resentment when they interview the victim’s family, as to not set off any alarm. Liv, a massive Seahawks fans, appears preoccupied with all the Seahawks memorabilia in the apartment.

In a pivotal plot development, we see Blaine and henchman Dino dumping Blaine’s father Angus into a well with a pair of cement shoes to keep him there. Dino would later return to free Angus from the well and give him a hammer for the cement on his feet. When Dino asks for a figure for his “good deed,” Angus yells “Shammmeee”. Dino, answers a phone call from his girlfriend to tell her an immense figure of cash was coming their way soon. While telling her he’s working out the details now, Angus hits Dino on the back of the head with a hammer.

Meanwhile, Ravi is experimenting with his anti-zombie vaccine when he relents and eats a patient’s brain. Ravi goes “au naturale” for the rest of the episode after consumption.

This isn’t the Seattle you knew anymore

Blaine becomes aghast at Liv and Clive casually interrogating a high-end restaurant customer. He tells them this is “New Seattle”, and in New Seattle they can’t question customers in his establishment.

Nevertheless, all signs point to a 49ers fan who keyed the Seahawks fan’s car as a prime suspect. We learn that previously, the murdered victim had spray painted the suspect’s car. There’s video evidence of him returning to their workplace on the night of his murder. The 49ers fan claims he had nothing to do with the murder, and he needed to return brain stems that had appeared in his possession without knowledge.

Liv figures out there’s a Z (like the one on her door) behind the Seahawks poster on the family’s apartment door. Clive tests blood pressure for both the mother and her son as Liv has a vision. Liv sees the father kicking out his son for sleeping with a zombie girl. The son then threatens to eat his father’s brain next. Liv explains she “sampled” the victim’s brain in order to see this vision.

The son is about to be under arrest, when it turns out the whole thing was a setup perpetuated by the victim’s wife. She explains her husband made her choose, “It’s me or him”, and she chose her son. Mystery solved.

Major decides on two recruits

During a group session meant to stifle zombie street gangs, things don’t go according to Major’s plans. First there’s bullying over brain tubes with one member, ‘Captain Seattle,’ stepping in. Then spitefulness toward Major and his kind for getting rationed two brain tubes instead of one. The group grows especially restless when they figure out there’s a vending machine for the tubes outside. One of the recruits, Jordan Gladwell, claims her siblings have been starving.

When we return to a session, we find the group in high spirits when Major figures out what’s going on. They broke into the brain tube vending machines. Captain Seattle admits to having two brain tubes instead of one, and Major looks through Jordan’s bag to discover the truth. He covers for the group when someone questions what happened to the vending machines.

When a higher-up puts Major on the spot to decide on two recruits, he choose Captain Seattle and Jordan. Major was told to choose two recruits he’d “go to war with.” Captain Seattle’s integrity and Jordan’s family loyalty and tenacity are likely the personality traits that made them chosen.

Angus is one hungry zombie

A now freed Angus spots a church with the message that, “Zombies Are Welcome.” He walks in and instantly questions the pastor if he is human or zombie. The pastor tells him he’s human of course, and zombies cannot become pastors. Angus questions this notion and lets out rage over his hunger. He uses the hammer he previously acquired from Dino on the lone human and feasts on his brains. Angus then asks the rest of the zombie congregation to join him in his dinner and they obligate. Fade to black, as credits roll on a dark tone.
