Kyrie Irving was so excited he was traded, he ran off the Uncle Drew set?
Kyrie Irving wanted out of Cleveland this summer, he got his wish and apparently he was much happier than we could have imagined.
It was on July 21, 2017 that we all heard the news —and keep in mind, just 39 days removed from the NBA Finals where we witnessed one of the best performances from a tandem of LeBron James and Irving come up short against the Golden State Warriors in a Game 5 loss that clinched the finals for the Warriors.
As two teammates or even “brothers,” left the floor that night, you just knew in your heart that they’d be back together to face-off once again against their rivals, the hated Warriors . . . but as we learned in July, Kyrie wasn’t having any of that nonsense. The Cavaliers would go on to trade Irving a month later, but the petty level remained at expert. Irving would go on to do a cryptic interview on First Take discussing his time in Cleveland, James deflected to the front office and got in some snide remarks of his own, but life would go on for both superstars.
Then today, per ESPN, actor Lil Rel Howery threw a bit of gas on the fire — yes seven months later, the plot continues to thicken. According to Howery, Irving was notified of the trade while filming for the upcoming film Uncle Drew and “was so happy.”
First of all, I have so many thoughts about 1) Kyrie Irving in a movie and 2) Uncle Drew actually coming to a big screen, but we’ll save that hate for another day. The fact that Irving ran off the set in such glee and delight when he found out his next move was to Boston further corroborates the sentiment felt playing with LBJ. Irving, a rather quiet star in the NBA when dealing with the media had to have known that eventually, this would leak out, why Lil Rel waited seven months to give us the tea, I’ll never know, but I’m here for it.

To be in a table-reading prepping for your featured film and casually interrupt with an “I just got traded” victory lap is a next-level troll. Whether or not Irving gets another championship without James is the biggest question going forward, but in the meantime, I think this admission from Howery proves we won’t be able to question his contentment any longer.
Stay tuned for that dance scene Howery describes when Uncle Drew hits theaters on June 29 this summer and find out how happy Irving actually appears.
