The 2018 SEC Tournament finds two surprising teams atop the bracket as the Auburn Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers enter as the No. 1 and 2 seeds, respectively.
This year’s SEC Tournament will take place at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
Following years of dominance by the Kentucky Wildcats, this season saw Big Blue Nation come in fourth during the regular season. Before a shellacking on Saturday by Florida, Kentucky was behind to round itself into something that resembled past Coach Calipari-led teams.
The depth of the SEC was on display all year, and the standings reflect that as eight teams finished with a conference record of .500 or better. Just as shocking as it might be to some that Auburn and Tennessee finished leading the pack, the winner of this year’s SEC Tournament could be someone unexpected. A lot of eyes will be on this tournament, as there are not only several teams capable of winning, but a nice collection of NBA talent spread out among the 14 teams participating, as well.
Aside from crowning a champion, this year the SEC Tournament could provide the basketball world with its first genuine look at Missouri freshman forward Michael Porter Jr. Porter Jr. has only played two minutes total so far this season.
Porter Jr. has been sidelined after undergoing back surgery in November. Rumor has it that the former No. 1 overall recruit is targeting the SEC Tournament to make his comeback. With the tournament being held in Missouri—which happens to be where Porter Jr. is from—this has a truly storybook feel to it.
The action tips off on Wednesday with South Carolina (11) facing Ole Miss (14) and Georgia (12) going up against Vanderbilt (13). The tournament ends with the championship game scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Selection Sunday.
