Alberto Del Rio’s return to the WWE might be imminent after meeting with Vince McMahon and his contract with Impact Wrestling ending next month.
Former two-time WWE Champion and two-time World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio might be on his way back to the company. According to PWInsider, Del Rio was over at WWE’s headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut to film an interview for an upcoming Rey Mysterio project. While there he met up with none other than the Chairman and CEO of WWE, Vincent Kennedy McMahon, about another run with the company.
McMahon has reportedly always been a big fan of the performer and very much in favor of his return. It was Del Rio’s choice to leave WWE back in Sept. 2016, requesting a release due to unhappiness at the time. A lack of a promised main event push was rumored to be at center of the decision.
Del Rio, originally returned made a surprise return to WWE on Oct. 25, 2015 at Hell in the Cell 2015. He defeated then WWE United States Champion John Cena in fairly clean fashion. Later on in his run, he would join the group known as the League of Nations featuring Del Rio, Sheamus, Rusev, and King Barrett. Coincidently, perhaps, Del Rio would lose his final match in the WWE on an episode of Smackdown against John Cena on July 26, 2016.
Del Rio wrestled as Alberto El Patrón following his departure around the indie circuit post-WWE before signing with Impact Wrestling in 2017. He would make his Impact Wrestling debut on the March 2, 2017 edition of Impact, defeating “Walking Armageddon” Bobby Lashley for the Impact Wrestling Heavyweight Championship in the main event. He relinquished the belt due to winning in ‘controversial’ fashion the next night. El Patrón, would then go on to defeat Magnus to win the Global Force Wrestling Global Championship. He would become the first-ever unified Champion after defeating Lashley at Impact’s Slammiversary XV event in June 2017.

Del Rio is currently scheduled to wrestle as Alberto El Patrón against Impact Wrestling World Champion Austin Aries at their Impact Wrestling Redemption event on April 22. According to PWInsider.com, Impact management met with Alberto El Patrón (Del Rio) and Eli Drake about signing new deals with the company this past weekend at Impact Wrestling’s One Night Only pay-per-view taping.
Previously, Del Rio has spoken about a desire to return to the WWE sometime in 2019. It appears the decision will ultimately be in his hands if he continues his run at Impact Wrestling or returns to the WWE.
