Blackhawks’ Jonathan Toews is all in on fighting (for a good cause)
Jonathan Toews and the Chicago Blackhawks gained a new teammate at their morning skate Tuesday: Mason Berg, a Chicago-area fifth-grader and Make-A-Wish recipient.
Twelve-year-old Mason Berg from the Chicago area became the newest member of the Blackhawks on Tuesday morning. As a part of the Illinois Make-A-Wish foundation, Mason was invited to the morning skate with the Blackhawks. Mason suffers from muscular dystrophy, but he did not let that stop him from making the most of his time with the team:
Mason attended the morning skate with his new teammates, followed by a quick presser afterwards. During his visit to the United Center, he impressed coaches and players alike, racking up goals on Blackhawks goalie Anton Forsberg, joking around with his new teammates and, maybe most notably, dropping the gloves with his team captain:
For Toews, it was his second fight in three days after a tussle with Anaheim’s Ryan Kessler on Sunday. Towes is admittedly 0-2 on both. To make matters worse, Mason pulled his fair share of pranks on Toews, as well.
Toews had the following to say, per the Chicago Tribune: “He was pulling tricks on me, handing me a water bottle with the screw off. Got a nice face wash. Apparently that was his idea too. It wasn’t Seabs [Brent Seabrook] or any of the guys telling him to do that.”
Mason and his family attended the game later that evening, in which the Blackhawks defeated the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 in overtime.
We’ll never get tired of seeing stories like this. The NHL and its players do a phenomenal job of making so many great kids’ dreams come true. Kudos to the Blackhawks organization and all those involved in bringing Mason’s wish to fruition for showing the world what a true tough guy looks like.

As for Toews, he’ll have plenty of time in the offseason to brush up on his fighting skills. Perhaps he should hold on to Mason’s contact information.
