Life Sentence, a new drama/comedy starring Lucy Hale, debuts on The CW Network tonight at 9:00 p.m ET / 8:00 p.m. Central following Riverdale. The show’s theme appears to be a dark comedy at its essence, built around Lucy Hale’s character, Stella Abbott. Hale’s character Stella is trying to live it up as much as she can after a terminal cancer diagnosis, only to learn that she’s been cured. It’ll be interesting to see how Life Sentence carefully balances drama and comedy for such a powerful subject like terminal cancer. In the trailer for the series, we see Hale’s character Stella asking for a funeral cake as opposed to a wedding cake. We learn Stella’s known about her fate for the last eight years and doing the best she can with the time she still has.
Then the good news arrives, “You’re not dying,” to which Stella replies in shocked surprise, “What did you just say?” She then smiles from ear to ear when the doctor tells her she’s cured. Stella is seen getting a job as a barista in the trailer. She then discovers details about her relationship she never knew about, like Love Actually not being her husband’s favorite movie.
When Stella arrives back home, she discovers her parents’ marriage is likely dissolving. The conclusion occurs after catching her mother with a woman kissing on the front porch. It’s then Stella figures out there’s been secrets being kept from her for the last eight years, all to keep the guise of a happy environment around her, as to not worsen her condition.
