Tom Savage rumors: Top 3 landing spots
The Houston Texans tried to start Tom Savage over Deshaun Watson last year. It was a poor decision, and now Savage is looking for work.
Tom Savage has played in 13 games over his four-year career, and frankly it hasn’t been pretty. How head coach Bill O’Brien decided to start Savage in Week 1 instead of Deshaun Watson boggles the mind, but here we are. Savage ended up playing eight games, throwing for five touchdowns and six interceptions.
At 28 years old this spring, Savage will be lucky to hang around the league as a backup. The Texans are moving on after his rookie deal ran out, something that leaves them in the market for a backup quarterback as well. The best part about Savage is the contract he will command, which will be minuscule in both term and money.
Best fits
1. Minnesota Vikings
The Vikings are watching all three of their 2017 quarterbacks hit the market in Teddy Bridgewater, Case Keenum and Sam Bradford. With Kirk Cousins being their main target, general manager Rick Spielman would be well-advised to land a veteran who can play behind him. Savage makes plenty of sense, allowing Minnesota to worry about upgrading other areas of the roster.
2. Arizona Cardinals
Arizona is in a very similar boat to the Vikings. The Cardinals are also seeing their trio from a year ago heading elsewhere, with Blaine Gabbert and Drew Stanton slated for free agency, and Carson Palmer headed for the wheelchair. Savage isn’t a starter by any means, but he could back up either another veteran or a young kid.

3. Cincinnati Bengals
Cincinnati is floundering, and while Savage isn’t going to right the ship, he can at least replace the soon-to-be-leaving AJ McCarron. The Bengals are never a team to spend serious money on a free agent, so Savage makes plenty of sense in the Queen City.
