2018 NFL Combine: 10 players who helped their stock
By Joe Romano
6. D.J. Chark, WR, LSU
From one wide receiver to another. Interestingly enough they’re both named D.J. and come from offenses where quarterbacks struggled to get them the ball consistently. D.J. Moore catapulted himself into the second receiver taken discussion. D.J. Chark put himself into the top 50 with an excellent combine.
Everyone knew coming in that Chark was a burner. It was easy to spot on tape, but his production did not match his physical tools. That can be chalked up to the abysmal quarterback play at LSU, because this guy can play. At over 6-foot-2, Chark is a bigger receiver who can run. There will always be a place for guys like that in the NFL. When he came out and posted the top 40 of all the wide receivers in Indianapolis, it became clear that he was not just fast but had special speed.
A fast 40 is enticing but that is not enough on it’s own to attract eyeballs at the combine. What made Chark a big winner was showing off his lower body explosiveness in the jump. He finished in the 92nd percentile in the vertical jump at 40 inches. Meanwhile, Chark showed burst horizontally with a 129 inch broad jump, good enough for the 91st percentile.
The talk of Chark in the first round seems premature but crazier things have happened. He did skip most of the agility drills, which meas he knew those times were not going to be on par with the rest. However, with his size and speed combination, someone will take a shot on him in day two. There are very few people that big that can run that fast, and the NFL wants all of them.
