Ed Dickson rumors: 3 best fits

CHARLOTTE, NC - OCTOBER 12: Ed Dickson
CHARLOTTE, NC - OCTOBER 12: Ed Dickson

The Carolina Panthers are unlikely to retain Ed Dickson, who could be a useful part of another tight end room.

At 30 years old and with only 1,985 receiving yards over an eight-year career, Ed Dickson is not going to knock anybody’s socks off. After being drafted in the 2010 draft by the Baltimore Ravens in the third round, Dickson won a Super Bowl as a backup to Dennis Pitta, and could be well-suited for a similar role moving forward.

Last season, Dickson was forced into a larger role when Greg Olsen broke his foot, and the veteran responded. All told, the former Oregon standout caught 30 passes for 437 yards and a touchdown, easily his best numbers since 2011, when he caught five touchdowns.

Best fits

1. Houston Texans

Houston might lose C.J. Fiedorowicz to an early retirement, and Dickson would be a nice replacement. Nobody would expect Dickson to be the focal point of the tight end room in Houston with Ryan Griffin in the room, but Dickson could provide a nice second option as well as a solid blocker.

2. New England Patriots

New England is strapped for cash this offseason, but Dickson would be a low-cost signing. The Patriots need some depth behind Rob Gronkowski and while the veteran wouldn’t give themmuch in the passing game, he could help the rushing attack out. Bill Belichick has a terrific eye for the right fits, and Dickson certainly fits the bill.

3. Indianapolis Colts

Anybody, anybody would be helpful behind Jack Doyle in Indianapolis. After watching Dwayne Allen and Coby Fleener leave in recent years, the Colts have to find a solid replacement, and Dickerson provides that. Again, he’s a willing blocker and most importantly, could help to keep Andrew Luck upright for the first time in a few seasons.
