The Carolina Hurricanes played us all on Friday, and everyone just has to sit there and accept their punishment, courtesy of the one and only Rick Astley.

Back in the day, Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” took the Internet by storm, pranking innocent YouTube users left and right when they were just looking for harmless cat videos. Everyone eventually became immune to the abuse, but it looks like the Carolina Hurricanes waited just the right amount of time to dust off an absolute classic.

The Hurricanes admittedly haven’t been playing too well this season, and they’re not even trying to hide that fact. They moved former general manager Ron Francis to a new role in the organization and are now looking for a new face to run their franchise behind the scenes.

When a team starts looking for a new leader, fans tend to swarm in like a big pack of wolves on their prey. In this case, fans flocked to the opportunity to take over as the team’s general manager, citing their ever-so-useful experience in video games, where they took over their favorite team and won 30 Stanley Cups in a row. And, for once, a team finally fired back.

The Hurricanes took to Twitter to respond, and put out an “application” for fans to try their luck in the process to become the team’s general manager. With some sneaky links and images, they successfully rick-rolled everyone, bringing us back to the early 2000’s in style:

The technique here was absolutely flawless. The TinyURL was perfect, making it appear like any other post they put out on social media directing fans to the team’s website. They even added some extra flare by being extra punny in their responses to the tweet.

While they may not be winning a ton in the 2017-2018 season, they can at least say they took a “W” when it came to fan interaction on social media. In this era we’re living in, that means something, and we’ll give the Hurricanes a gold star for this.

Unfortunately, however, Rickrolling hasn’t been popular since the Hurricanes last qualified for the playoffs nine years ago, so we’re going to have to take that star back as a penalty.
