Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt are tied for third in the Bundesliga with 42 points ahead of their game Saturday at Signal Iduna Park. Only four points separate second-place Schalke and sixth-place RB Leipzig. Dortmund and Frankfurt are one point behind second place and three points ahead of Leipzig in the race for Champions League spots.
Peter Stoger improved his unbeaten run with Dortmund to 10 games after a 1-1 draw with RB Leipzig. Marco Reus scored the lone goal against Leipzig, giving him three in his first four games since returning from injury. The return of Reus, along with the resurgence of André Schürrle and addition of Michy Batshuayi has completed rejuvenated Dortmund’s attack but has reduced playing time for American Christian Pulisic. With Maximilian Philipp nearing a return from injury, Pulisic could see move from the wing inside and play behind Batshuayi as Shinji Kagawa recovers from an injury.
Frankfurt defeated Hannover 1-0 with wing-back Danny da Costa scoring. Niko Kovac’s side have won five of their last seven games to move from the middle of the table to a Champions League spot. Kovac’s decision to use a back-three has paid dividens for Frankfurt, who have allowed the second fewest goals this season. Sébastien Haller leads Eintracht with eight goals this season, while Kevin Prince-Boateng has rejuvenated his career, scoring five goals. American International Timothy Chandler has been a regular starter this season for Frankfurt, moving from left-back forward to midfield.
