Despite losing 4-2 to Roma last week, Napoli are still first in Serie A, one point ahead of Juventus. However, Juventus have a game in hand on Napoli as the two team battle for the league title. Inter Milan are fifth in Serie A, battling with Roma and Lazio for the final Champions League spots.
Despite scoring an early goal, Roma scored four straight, winning 4-2. The loss ended Napoli’s 10 game winning streak. Dries Mertens scored against Roma, giving him a team-best 17 goals this season. Napoli’s front three of Mertens, José Callejón, and Lorenzo Insigne have combined for 32 of the club’s 62 goals. After getting eliminated by RB Leipzig in the Europa League, Maurizio Sarri will be able to focus exclusively on the Serie A title race.
Inter were supposed to play city rivals AC Milan last weekend but the game was postponed following the sudden death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori. Luciano Spalletti’s side are two points behind Roma and one point behind Lazio in the race for Champions League. However, Inter have played one fewer game than both Rome clubs. Inter started the season with a 16 game unbeaten streak but have struggled in their last 10 games. Spalletti’s team have picked up only 11 points in their last 10 games, falling from first to fifth in the Serie A table. Mauro Icardi leads Inter with 18 goals this season but has missed the past four games with an injury. Icardi is expected to play Sunday but has struggled lately, scoring only two goals over his last seven games.
