Defending Serie A champions Juventus may be in second place chasing Napoli, but the momentum appears to be on their side. After last Saturday’s 1-0 win against Lazio on a last-gasp goal from Paulo Dybala, the wind is at Juve’s back. With a game in hand, the Bianconeri take on Udinese in the friendly home confines of Allianz Stadium. There seems to be nothing that can stop Juve’s march to the top of the table, especially after Napoli were soundly defeated by Roma 4-2.
Juventus, fresh off their Champions League match against Tottenham on Wednesday, need to refocus in time for Sunday’s key league game. Tired legs, however, aren’t enough to stop manager Massimiliano Allegri’s deep bench. Competing on several fronts this year, including having reached the Coppa Italia final, hasn’t taken its toll. Instead, this is a team with experience, seemingly reinvigorated by the chance to win several trophies this season.
“It was a difficult game, because Lazio are in third place, they held out well physically and we had very limited options in attack. We played the game that we had to play and had to come away with the victory. I told the lads that a single incident would decide this match and I was right. It wasn’t the best performance on a technical level [against Lazio] and we gave the ball away too much, but we were alert on their counterattacks, as they hurt us in the past with those,” Allegri told reporters last Saturday.
“We had to be wide awake and stay in the running to the very end. I had no doubts on the character of my players and, as always, they were extraordinary. We had to stay in it and make the most of the incident that went our way. The goal means a lot for Dybala and the team,” he added.
Dybala, who missed a chunk of the winter due to injury, remains Juve’s most lethal player in the final third. Despite his season of troubles, the player some call Lionel Messi’s heir exhibited a resilience and fight few players possess. Dybala, who missed six league games due to a thigh muscle strain, has 15 goals and three assists in 21 Serie A matches. He remains the team’s top scorer, just one goal ahead of countryman Gonzalo Higuain.
Udinese, meanwhile, are in 11th place and safe from relegation. With little to play for, this is a side that’s not been too impressive this season. Coached by former AC Milan and Lazio right-back Massimo Oddo, Udinese are a few quality players away from challenging for a spot in the Europa League.
Juve’s roster is certainly better and stronger than Udinese’s. Not helping matters is the absence of striker Kevin Lasagna. The 25-year-old, who suffered a thigh strain last month, won’t play. There’s no word yet on whether he’ll return this season.
