The Indianapolis Colts need to change up their backfield. Former Patriots running back Dion Lewis is an option.

Running backs in the 2018 version of the NFL are asked to do more than just carry the ball. Their roles are becoming increasingly more diverse. One of the best examples of that is former New England Patriot Dion Lewis.

Lewis is a “Swiss army knife” of a running back. He excels at more than just running the ball. Lewis has shown ability as a receiver both out of the backfield and split out wide. He also adds to the roster with his ability to return kicks and punts.

The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly interested in the free agent running back. According to Mike Giardi of NBCSportsBoston.com, the Colts are “in.”

Coming off of his best season in the league, Lewis, only 27 years old, has proven to be a dynamic player when healthy. He has struggled with injuries in the past. It is a big reason that New England was able to sign him relatively cheap from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Lewis is one of the smallest backs in the league, measuring on 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds. Even with that small frame, Lewis is not just an outside runner. New England would frequently run him between the tackles, and he was effective. Once at the second level, he has the elusiveness to break big runs.

With former starter Frank Gore set to hit free agency, Indianapolis is wise to look at free agent running backs. Lewis would pair with last year’s fifth round pick Marlon Mack to give Andrew Luck a pair of shifty and dynamic players next to him.

There is a deep crop of running backs entering the league via the 2018 NFL draft. Lewis could serve as a bridge between the rookie and Mack while also offering depth at the position.
