NHL Power Rankings: Ducks soar, Maple Leafs in free fall
30. Ottawa Senators
There is no team that has been on more of a rollercoaster than the Ottawa Senators. They were one goal away from the Stanley Cup finals. Then, once this season started, things began to unravel. They hit a very slow start and fell behind early before rumors emerged about owner Eugene Melynk’s willingness to move the team. Finally, the biggest bombshell of them all: the Senators were willing to move on from star defenseman Erik Karlsson. Rumors circulated endlessly leading up to the NHL trade deadline, all for Ottawa to not make a trade.
This past week started well for the Senators; they were able to beat the Dallas Stars. However, the rest of the week did not go so well. They lost to the Buffalo Sabres and the Calgary Flames. This week won’t be any easier. First up is the Florida Panthers, then the Tampa Bay Lightning, followed by the Dallas Stars and finally the Columbus Blue Jackets. All four of these teams are fighting for their playoff lives. The Senators have no chance of the playoffs at this point of the season, but they still need to show the fans something positive. Ottawa will be one of the most interesting teams to monitor this offseason.
