Sevilla beat Manchester United 2-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday, March 13. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Sevilla knocked Manchester United out of the Champions League on Tuesday, running out 2-1 winners at Old Trafford thanks to a second-half brace by substitute Wissam Ben Yedder.
The first half was uneventful. United looked dangerous in the early stages, with Romelu Lukaku, probably their best player, proving a handful for Sevilla’s center-backs, but his teammates failed to make the most of his good hold-up play.
Sevilla grew into the game as the half progressed. Steven Nzonzi and Ever Banega controlled the tempo for much of the contest, but they too were let down by a lack of quality from the players in front of them.
The second half provided more goalmouth action in its opening 15 minutes than the first half did in 45, with Eric Bailly making a last-ditch tackle to deny Joaquin Correa, Sergio Rico making a nice save from Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez and Luis Muriel also going close before the hour mark.
The tie’s first goal finally arrived in the 74th minute though Ben Yedder, who had just been introduced of the bench. Sevilla’s number 9 controlled a nice pass by Pablo Sarabia before slotting in to David de Gea’s left.
Jose Mourinho brought on Anthony Martial and Juan Mata with his side needing two goals to advance, but the Spanish side doubled their lead in the 78th minute, de Gea not quite able to keep out Ben Yedder’s back-post header.
United pulled one back in the 84th minute, Lukaku finishing from close range following Marcus Rashford’s corner, but it proved to be too little too late as United were left to rue their failure to get an away goal in the first leg.
