Green Bay Packers part ways with Jordy Nelson

The Green Bay Packers’ most productive pass-catcher for the last decade is being released. Is there a market for wide receiver Jordy Nelson?

On Tuesday, there was some good news and some bad news if you a follower of the franchise that has won more NFL titles than any other in league history.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with big-time target Jimmy Graham. The productive tight end will sign a three-year deal with the club thanks to new general manager Brian Gutekunst.

As mentioned, the team is also parting ways with veteran wideout Jordy Nelson. A second-round pick in 2008 from Kansas State, he’s hauled in 550 passes for 7,848 yards and 69 touchdowns. You will recall that the 32-year-old performer missed all of 2015 with a knee injury suffered in a preseason game at Pittsburgh. He responded one season later with 97 grabs, good for 1,257 yards and 14 touchdowns. That earned the reliable veteran 2016 NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors.

Four times in his nine seasons on the field, Nelson totaled at least 1,000 receiving yards. In a three-season span from 2013-14 and ’16, he did not miss a game and racked up an impressive 280 grabs, 35 of those for scores. In each of those campaigns, Nelson racked up at least 85 catches.

So indeed, where does this leave quarterback Aaron Rodgers when it comes to not having his favorite target? The Packers are still pretty loaded at the wide receiver position with Randall Cobb, Davante Adams and Geronimo Allison – to name a few. The addition of Graham is also a huge plus. But there’s little doubt that Jordy Nelson will be sorely missed because you can’t easily replace that production (although that was the case in ’15).

Meanwhile, the resilient Nelson should have no issues finding a new home sooner than later.
