The No. 3 Michigan Wolverines battle the No. 14 Montana Grizzlies in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Wolverines have an edge in this matchup but don’t count the Grizzlies out just yet.
Michigan (28-7) is coming off its second Big Ten Tournament win. They’re 4-4 against top 32 teams, giving them an upper hand over the Grizzlies who didn’t play any top 32 teams this season. The Wolverines lead the Grizzlies in both offensive and defensive efficiency, but they have to be careful when fouling the Grizzlies, as Montana is 70.70% at the charity stripe over Michigan’s 65.90%.
Thursday’s game is not only head coach Travis DeCuire’s first NCAA appearance with the team, but it’s the first time that the Grizzlies aren’t playing on the West Coast during the tournament. The Grizzlies were the Big Sky regular season champions and punched their ticket with a win at the conference tournament. They’ve never played Michigan before, so this game is a big deal for the team in a lot of ways.
Analysts have Michigan winning by 7 points, but the Wolverines haven’t played since March 4 so they will have to get back into their rhythm. The Grizzlies are known for stealing the ball and that will be something Michigan needs to watch.
