No. 6 Houston Cougars face the No. 11 San Diego State Aztecs in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. Though Houston (26-7) holds the advantage over the Aztecs (22-10), the Cougars need to watch this San Diego State team that battled all the way through the Mountain West Tournament to upset the top seeds and nab the automatic bid to the Big Dance.
Houston is favored to beat San Diego State by four points according to ESPN commentators. They’re sitting on an RPI of 18 and they’re 5-3 against top 32 teams. They lead San Diego State in every category except free throw percentage, where the Aztecs have a narrow 72.20% over the Cougars’ 71.70%.
The San Diego State Aztecs return to the NCAA Tournament after beating Fresno State and the Mountain West top-seeded Nevada in the quarter and semifinals before taking out New Mexico in the title game. San Diego doesn’t have much to point to in terms of advantages over Houston, with the slight edge in free throws with 72.20%. For the Aztecs to pull off a win, they will need to keep up the scrappy play that carried them through the Mountain West Tournament, along with making every free throw. They’ll need every point they can muster to make it to the Second Round.
