Bashaud Breeland fails physical with Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers agreed to sign cornerback Bashaud Breeland to a three-year deal, but couldn’t finalize due to a failed physical.

For the second time in as many days, the NFL has seen an agreement in free agency get voided by a failed physical, and both involved former Washington Redskins players. On Thursday, Ryan Grant and the Baltimore Ravens went their separate ways over a physical, and lightning struck again on Friday, with cornerback Bashaud Breeland and the Carolina Panthers hitting a snag.

Breeland was ready to sign a three-year deal worth $21 million with $11 million guaranteed, only to fail his physical due to a nasty cut on his left foot. The cut will require a skin graph, leaving Breeland in rough shape until later in the spring. There’s a good chance that the youngster won’t be able to pass a physical until after the draft.

Considering the injury, Breeland might want to consider signing a one-year deal to reestablish his value before hitting the market once again in 2019. The former Clemson star has started 57 games over the first four years of his career, racking up eight interceptions and a touchdown.

As for Carolina, the Panthers are now left in a very tough spot. General manager Marty Hurney believed he had a replacement for Daryl Worley, who was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles last week for wide receiver Torrey Smith. Instead, the Panthers now have a huge hole in the defense and dwindling options to sign. At this time, the best corners available include E.J. Gaines and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.
