Before their game on Saturday, Sister Jean told the Loyola basketball team God was on their side and she wasn’t wrong.

The Loyola-Chicago Ramblers did it again. A second, last-second shot to get the go-ahead score to punch their ticket to the next round. Which means more Sister Jean for college hoops fans next weekend, who has been inspiring the Loyola team and simultaneously captivating the hearts of fans everywhere.

“I told them that we were going to win, that we could do it and that God would be on our side,” Sister Jean said. “We’re going to do it today, to keep calm and to put into play everything that coach told them to do.

She wasn’t wrong. Look at this game-winning shot.

Clayton Custer throws up a shot that’s short, hits the front of the rim, kisses the glass and then tickles the net on its way through the hoop for the game-winning points. That’s either an incredible amount of luck or divine intervention depending on your religious beliefs.

“I don’t always say this, but I got to give glory to God on that one,” Custer said in his post-game interview. “The ball hit the front of the rim and popped up in the air. I think that’s just all the years of hard work coming into one play. I’ve given my whole heart and soul into this game and I’ve worked so hard since I was so little and to get that bounce on that shot, it makes all those hours in the gym worth it.

“And I cannot believe that just happened.”

Neither can Tennessee fans.

And to boot, Sister Jean is also a bracketologist in her spare time. She had Loyola going to the Sweet 16 in her bracket, but apparently doesn’t have the Ramblers going further than that.

“I just thought they would go to the Sweet 16, and now we may go even [further] than that,” Sister Jean said. “We just go one game at a time though. We’re going to the Sweet 16 now.”

Custer quipped: “We’re going to have to prove Sister Jean wrong on this one.”
