Where can you find the pilot episode of the new series Instinct online?

Instinct is a new series on CBS that follows a retired CIA operative who gets recruited back into law enforcement in a rather unorthodox way. Following his retirement for the CIA, Dylan Reinhart became a university professor and author. He teaches classes on criminal and abnormal behavior during the day, and writes about it at night. Maybe he even wrote about that kind of behavior a little too well.

In Instinct, Dr Reinhart gets pulled back into law enforcement when a serial killer starts (and continues) using one of his books as a kind of template or inspiration for the murders.

The first episode of the series, aptly titled “Pilot,” will introduce Dr. Reinhart, played by Alan Cumming, and the police detective Elizabeth Needham (Bojana Novakovic). Elizabeth wants to enlist Dylan’s aid in catching the serial killer using his book.

Despite the rather serious subject matter involved, Instinct seems careful not to take itself too seriously. Part of that may simply come from Alan Cumming’s natural comedic timing. Some of this comes through in the preview for the first episode, which you can watch HERE.

This lighthearted nature could work for the show pretty well. It just has to make sure it doesn’t carry over to the actual events. Some banter between detectives (or detectives and their friends/family) could help Instinct separate itself from the darker, supposedly more realistic cop-shows. There are certainly more than enough to go around. What the show should be careful of is pushing the comedy too close to the murder. I don’t know that they will. I don’t know how heavily the show will push the murder/serial killer vs the abnormal behavior aide of things. But finding a balance between the two will be important to give the show some staying power.
