Are Napoli good enough to win the scudetto? It’s a question that has plagued them since the summer. Being in first place for much of the season, even as defending champion Juventus stuck close behind them, did nothing to silence critics.
Napoli now finds themselves in second place, following a surge by Juve in recent weeks, and need the points against Genoa if they want their April 22 head-to-head clash in Turin to mean anything. All that, however, is a month away. Instead, Napoli face the obstacle of Genoa at the San Paolo before a home crowd that hasn’t lost hope that they can win the league for the first time since the 1989-90 season.
There’s no doubt Napoli will be in the Champions League next season. That’s not the point. Maurizio Sarri’s team have been playing attractive and offensive soccer for much of the past few years, but have very little in the trophy cabinet to show for it. Anything short of the scudetto will be seen as a failure. It would cancel out what has been a great season for strikers like Lorenzo Insigne and Dries Mertens.
Optimism is still running high among the Partenopei faithful. Although the team remain focused, there was controversy in the Napoli camp this past week after Sarri made lewd comments to a female reporter.
Sarri apologized Monday for making the sexist comment aimed at the journalist after his side’s 0-0 draw Sunday at Inter Milan. The reporter had asked Sarri if Napoli’s title hopes had been dented by the score, coupled with Juventus’ 2-0 win against Udinese. In response, Sarri said: “You’re a woman. You’re beautiful and I won’t tell you to f— off for those two reasons.”
Claims of sexism aside, Napoli have had a solid season. The recent defeat to Roma and stalemate against Inter have caused Napoli to stutter and Juve to take over first place. Nevertheless, it remains a two-horse race where anything could happen.
Napoli defeated Genoa 3-2 back in October when the sides met for the first time this season.
Napoli and Genoa, both the clubs and fanbases, have traditionally been friendly to one another over the years. Friendly or not, don’t expect 13th-place Genoa to do Napoli any favors — at least not at this juncture of the season — as teams continue to fight for Champions League/Europa League spots and avoid relegation.
Genoa appear to be a safe from the drop zone, but are also too far from a Europa League spot. Despite that, this is a Genoa team that can be competitive, something evidenced earlier this season when they defeated Inter 2-0 at a time when the Milan-based club looked like they were competing for the title. They also feature several young stars, including 16-year-old striker Eddy Salcedo (who recently caught the eye of Juve scouts) and 17-year-old right back Antonio Candela.
