Who will save the day for each MLB team?
Chicago White Sox: Yoan Moncada
The fact that the White Sox currently have James Shields listed as the No. 1 starter on their depth chart is a fairly good indication of the type of season they’re about to have. (Hint: it’s not going to be pretty.) No disrespect to Shields. He’s had a solid career, including a four-year stretch where he was one of the best pitchers in the game. But his best days are far behind him.
There may not be many wins in store for the White Sox in 2018, but one thing fans will have to look forward to is a full season from the highly-touted Yoan Moncada. Moncada was Chicago’s prize acquisition when they sent six-time all-star pitcher Chris Sale to Boston.
Moncada was called up by the Red Sox in September of 2016. At the time, he was widely considered to be the top prospect in baseball. After being traded to the White Sox, the team called him up in July of last season. He slashed .231/.338/.412 with eight home runs and 22 RBI in 231 plate appearances.
Not exactly the start to his career he was hoping for. But he was the number one prospect in baseball for a reason. That potential star power is going to shine through soon. And we should get a good glimpse of it this season. Instead of auditioning for a call-up, this time around he’ll be preparing as the starting second baseman for the Sox. Despite a sub-par start to his major league career, Moncada still looks like a budding star. He’ll be the face of the White Sox this season.
