Round 3 – Pick 93

Kurt Benkert, QB, Virginia

The Jaguars have been linked to quarterbacks all over the draft. Mocks have placed Louisville quarterback, and former Heisman winner, Lamar Jackson in at pick 29 since the end of the season. With Jacksonville re-signing Blake Bortles this offseason, the likelihood they take a quarterback in round one dropped significantly. The team could and likely will find a developmental quarterback at some point in this draft.

In this mock draft, that some point is round three with Virginia quarterback Kurt Benkert. In this shallow and top heavy quarterback class, Benkert is one of the few mid-round quarterbacks with some starter upside. The first thing that jumps off tape with him is his big arm. He can make almost any throw on the field.

Jacksonville was able to use scheme and coaching to help Bortles coming out of college. With Benkert sitting behind him it could help the development of both. Bortles will be pushed more than he has the past two seasons. Benkert will take the time he needs to improve his biggest weakness, his accuracy. His excellent athleticism would not force Jacksonville to change their offense much, including the quarterback runs that Bortles showed in the playoffs.
