NHL Power Rankings: Bruins climb as the Golden Knights fall
20. Calgary Flames (-2)
The Calgary Flames looked like a team that would be pushing for a wild-card playoff spot for much of the season. They are young, fast and entertaining to watch. But injuries dashed their playoff hopes and will bring their season to an end. Mike Smith went down, and the Flames struggled greatly. He is back, but the Flames are still struggling to get back on track. The Flames will need to figure it out fast if they want to rebound and push for the playoffs. It isn’t impossible; they are only four points out with nine games left. They have a lot of tough competition to leap ahead of to make it in.
The lone bright spot from last week was the fact the Flames were able to beat their Provincial rival Edmonton Oilers. It was a one-goal shutout victory in front of the home crowd in Calgary. Other than that, the Flames struggled, losing three games by a combined score of 16-to-6. The New York Islanders came into Calgary and scored five and then the San Jose Sharks visited to score seven. The Flames then headed south of the border to play the Vegas Golden Knights getting shut out and losing by four. It won’t be any easier this week. They open against the Arizona Coyotes and then close out the week against Anaheim and the San Jose Sharks.
