49ers, Cowboys should be on notice after Jaguars release Allen Hurns

Another former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver is going to hit the open market.
The Jacksonville Jaguars watched their former 1,000-yard receiver Allen Robinson sign with the Chicago Bears once free agency kicked off. In response, they signed former Colts wide receiver Donte Moncrief to a deal worth only $2 million less. With Moncrief on board the team decided that Allen Hurns is also expendable. Tuesday ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced that Jacksonville will be releasing the former undrafted free agent.
As Schefter pointed out, a lot of NFL teams will be interested in Hurns. He’s only 26 years old after four seasons in the league. Two years ago, in 2015, he paired with Robinson to give the Jaguars two 1,000-yard receivers.
Now the NFL is in the second wave of free agency, Hurns will likely draw interest from teams that missed on Robinson or other big wide receiver signing Sammy Watkins.
The first team that comes to mind is the San Francisco 49ers. They were frequently linked to Robinson and Watkins. San Francisco has its quartebrack of the future in Jimmy Garropolo and will need to surround him with weapons. It also has massive amounts of cap space even after Garropolo’s extension and the signings of Jerrick McKinnon and Weston Richburg.

The Dallas Cowboys will throw their name in the ring as well. The team is desperate to upgrade its wide receiving corps. As a unit, the team’s receivers struggled last year and a lot of Dak Prescott’s regression can be placed on their shoulders. Hurns would be an upgrade over current number-two option Terrance Williams. They were also linked, and eventually priced out of, the Watkins free agency.

Teams aside from Dallas and San Francisco will also be interested in Hurns’ services. The Colts have cap space and a need opposite T.Y. Hilton after losing Moncrief. The New York Jets would also make sense. They have uncertainty surrounding their top two options, Robbie Anderson and Quincy Enunwa.
