The Nevada State Athletic Commission has temporarily suspended Canelo Alvarez ahead of his rematch against Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin.

The highly anticipated rematch between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez may not happen after all.

According to reports, Nevada State Athletic Commission has temporarily suspended Alvarez for a pair of positive tests for the banned substance clenbuterol.

As a result, Alvarez will be required to appear before the commission on April 10 to determine whether a suspension is warranted, meaning his scheduled fight against Golovkin on May 5 could be scrapped altogether.

This is just the latest chapter in drama between the two middleweight pugilists. The NSAC had been investigating the case ever since the news of Canelo’s failed drug test came out on March 5.

Initially, the Alvarez’s camp pointed toward tainted meat from his native Mexico while declaring he was willing to cooperate with any other testing ahead of the planned fight.

“I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me,” Canelo said in a statement earlier this month. “I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”

In terms of actual competition, Canelo (49-1-2) and Golovkin (37-1-0) fought to a controversial split draw in their initial throwdown in September.

Prior to that performance, Canelo finished Amir Khan with a violent sixth-round knockout before earning back-to-back decisions over Julio Caesar Chavez Jr. and Miguel Cotto. To date, his only professional loss has come to the recently retired Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Similarly, Golovkin was looking to improve off his victory over Daniel Jacobs, his first win to reach the judges’ scorecards, while facing Canelo.

The two pugilists were set to face off again on May 5 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the unified WBA, WBC, IBF, IBO, Ring magazine and lineal middleweight titles.
