Michigan quarterback John O’Korn has delusions he’s 2018 Tom Brady

John O’Korn is not on the radar of NFL teams, but he’s willing to believe he should be.

Any conversation of the top quarterbacks in the 2018 draft class starts with five or six guys and trickles down from there. Debate over the immediate readiness of Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield and Josh Rosen will go on for another month heading into the draft, and it will continue afterward. John O’Korn is hardly on the radar of NFL scouts, but he seems to think that’s a mistake.

O’Korn worked out at Michigan’s Pro Day on Friday, and via The Detroit Press, said the following to reporters.

“Honestly, I think I’m the most NFL-ready quarterback in this draft just as far as terminology, and knowing what to do on a day-to-day basis, game-planning,” O’Korn said.

“I was part of the game-plan meetings with coach Harbaugh, coach (Pep) Hamilton, the whole staff, coach (Tim) Drevno, all last fall, so just on a day-to-day basis what it takes to be an NFL quarterback, I think I would choose myself over any other guy in this draft in that regard.”

Working under Jim Harbaugh, a reasonably successful NFL quarterback when he played and a successful head coach at that level, will surely help O’Korn as he tries to make it at the next level. Pep Hamilton has been an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in the NFL, so that helps too. But good coaching and being mentally prepared for the NFL can’t overcome what’s not on O’Korn’s on-field resume.

O’Korn started four games last season and played in 10 contests, as he split time with Wilton Speight and Brandon Peters due to poor play and injuries, completing 53.5 percent of his passes for 973 yards with two touchdowns and six interceptions. He played two seasons at Michigan, with his most extensive collegiate action coming as a freshman at Houston in 2013 (3,117 yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions over 13 games).

Back in 2000, there was a Michigan quarterback who struggled to keep the starting job in Ann Arbor and was drafted in the sixth round at pick No. 199. But John O’Korn is not likely to be drafted, whereas all Tom Brady needed was an opportunity to get on a track to becoming the greatest quarterback in NFL history.
