Ndamukong Suh update: Rams, Jets still in mix

The Ndamukong Suh sweepstakes are still raging, and while no team has the obvious lead, there are two that make the most sense.

After visiting with the Tennessee Titans, New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Rams, we thought the bidding war for Ndamukong Suh’s services were narrowed to a trio. Instead, the New York Jets came roaring into the picture, reportedly offering more than any of the others.

However, Suh didn’t make an official visit to Florham Park, casting doubt for some on how serious he’s considering the offer.

So where is Suh leaning on his decision? Smart money says he’ll end up in Los Angeles or New York.

The cap space shouldn’t be a problem for anybody but the Saints, who currently have $8.468 million to work with. Tennessee is also in the mix, but it’s the smallest market of the four, and perhaps the team with the fewest selling points. The Titans are good, but not a championship contender (unlike the Saints and Rams) and don’t seem willing to match the financial wherewithal of the Jets.

If money is what Suh is after, New York will eventually win out. The Jets have been aggressive in their pursuit and could sell the 31-year-old on bright lights and a huge check.

If Suh wants to win, the Rams are the choice. Los Angeles can give the former Nebraska star an incredible defense to work with, starring Wade Phillips, Aaron Donald, Marcus Peters, Lamarcus Joyner and Aqib Talib. Los Angeles also can sell the notion of bright lights and great weather, along with a solid if not outrageous payday. Frankly, if one had to handicap, the Rams should be in the lead for Suh’s services.

Of course, the four remain in the bidding until they don’t. The Titans could increase their offer. The Jets could overwhelm Suh with a front-loaded deal. The Saints could restructure other contracts to open up cash, and the Rams could put a package in front of the five-time All-Pro that is too good to refuse.

We should have the answer shortly, but until then, the holding pattern continues.
