Spain hosting Argentina is yet another heavyweight encounter during this month’s international window. It’s also an important tuneup for two teams that are among the list of favorites to win the World Cup this summer in Russia.

This truly is a clash of titans: Argentina are fourth in the latest FIFA rankings behind just Germany, Brazil and Portugal, while Spain are currently sixth.

The game will be played at the Wanda Metropolitano, home to Atletico Madrid, and is expected to form the centerpiece in what is expected to be a great game between two sides loaded with talent. Lionel Messi will take on several of his Barcelona teammates on Tuesday as Argentina try to snatch a victory as manager Jorge Sampaoli continues to test tactics and formations this month.

Messi, who turns 31 in June and could feature in his last World Cup this summer, said in a recent interview on America TV’s La Cornisa that he wants to be more of a team player than focus on personal achievements. For Messi, it could be his last shot at a World Cup title.

“Before I got the ball and did my own game,” he told the Argentine TV channel. “Now I try to play for the team. That the ball goes via me more and I don’t try and finish things off as much. Basically I am not as selfish. I try to build the play from a different position. I continue to run the same as before but in a different way.”

Sampaoli is also going a different way regarding his starting lineup. After ignoring Paulo Dybala of Juventus and Mauro Icardi of Inter Milan, Sampaoli called up Angel Correa of Atletico Madrid. He is likely to get the start at his home ground as Atleti fans will pack the ground to cheer him on. Messi, as the team’s playmaker, is the fulcrum of this Argentina side. On the wings, Sampaoli has several choices, including PSG’s Angel Di Maria and Gonzalo Higuain of Juventus.

Correa is likely to face off against his Atleti teammate Diego Costa, who recently returned to action, although the 2010 World Cup champions will be without Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata, who is sidelined with an injury.

Spain manager Julen Lopetegui has also called up some new faces, including Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso as well as a pair of midfielders in Valencia’s Dani Parejo and Villarreal’s Rodrigo Hernandez, ahead of veterans such as David Villa, who plays in MLS with New York City FC. Villa was last called up over the summer during World Cup qualifying given his exceptional form at NYCFC. The players have spent the past week together at the team’s national training center in Madrid.

“I take it as a chance,” Alonso said of his first call-up to the national team. “The head coach knows me … It’s a chance to show myself and adapt quickly to the team, in order for them to count on me more times.”
