It’s MLB Opening Day and it’s time to kick off the 2018 season with the Los Angeles Angels traveling North for a game against the Oakland Athletics, who are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2018.
There’s a lot to look forward to in the Los Angeles Angels organization heading into the 2018 season. The Angeles finished in second place behind the Houston Astros in the 2017 AL West, posting an 80-82 record. With perennial all-star Mike Trout at the ready, along with newcomer (and hopeful ace) Shohei Ohtani, the Angels might be in a good place this season despite going 13-19 in spring training. RHP Garrett Richards (2017: 0-2, 2.28 ERA, 27.2 IP, 27 K) will take the mound in his second Opening Day start for the Angels. He didn’t see much action in 2017 but he played in four spring training games, going 1-0 and notching 14 strikeouts in 12. 2 innings.
Oakland has been in the basement of the AL West and they look to emerge in 2018 in time for the 50th anniversary of the franchise, officially celebrated on April 17. In 2017 the As finished the season 75-87, and they showed signs of improvement in spring training with a 14-15 record. RHP Kendall Graveman will make his second consecutive Opening Day start against the Angels. Like Richards, Graveman was hit with injuries in 2017 but still posted a 6-4 record in 19 starts. He saw 5 games and 14.1 innings in spring training, with 16 strikeouts.
